NPR recently reported that a “black spot” had appeared on the sun, roughly six times the size of Earth. That’s what they called it. The star at the center of our solar system, source of all life as we know it, benevolent dictator of planetary orbits– has a “black spot” on it. Maybe the recent 2012 DA14 asteroid flyby, has made me a little anxious, or perhaps it was the Russian Metor Strike, or even watching Melancholia one too many times, I don’t know, but the announcement of a black spot on the sun scares the shit out of me. “Can I get an alert sent to my phone if this happens again?” I wondered.
Maybe, but then again, if the sun decides to consume the blue planet in a hellish conflagration before abandoning us to the darkest depths of a black hole, what the hell am I going to do about it?
