I found this plaque on a New Orleans cemetery crypt a few years ago. They compare Dominique You, a turn of the century “privateer, pirate, and soldier” to French knight Pierre Terrail, seignur de Bayard, and I think it’s pretty hot. Go look at his Wikipedia page, the man must have had a body count that was unbelievable. The plaque reads, with some alteration to the translation from the French original:
Intrepid warrior on land and sea
In a hundred combats showed his valor
This new Bayard beyond reproach or fear
Could have witnessed the ending of the
World without trembling
Makes “I told you I was sick” look a lot less clever.
